The Field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

We'd like to provide you with some information about the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS). Over the last 10 years, the field of OMS has expanded tremendously in response to medical and dental health care advancements. The Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery defines OMS as a specialty of dentistry which includes the surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the function and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. The oral and maxillofacial area of the mouth consists of the jaws and face.

OMS is a surgical specialty that involves both dental and medical surgical treatments; it diagnoses and treats diseases, deformities , injuries associated with cosmetic defects of the facial and oral region. It requires 4 to 6 years of hospital base training after dental school. It includes extensive training on traditional oral surgical treatments, facial trauma, general anesthesia, reconstructive surgery of the face and jaws, treatment of oral and facial pathology and cosmetic surgery of the face. The traditional oral surgical procedures include extraction of wisdom and other teeth, removal of oral lesions, exposure of impacted teeth for orthodontic reasons, implant surgery to replace missing teeth and bone and gingival grafting procedures. OMS have 6 months to 1 year in general anesthesia training (techniques in local anesthesia, general anesthesia and IV sedation). There are rotations in emergency medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery and otolaryngology.

Many of the procedures Dr. Burger performs are in the office. These procedures include the extraction of wisdom teeth and other teeth, removal of oral and facial lesions, laser surgery to eliminate and reduce snoring, placement of dental implants to replace missing teeth and dentures, regeneration of deficient bone and gum tissues around teeth and implants and cosmetic periodontal surgery to enhance gum tissue contours and beautify a patient's smile. They also include cosmetic periodontal surgery to enhance gum tissue contours and beautify and patients smile. They also include cosmetic procedures such as chin and cheekbone enhancements, facial rejuvenation procedures including the use of botox and laser technology to reduce facial wrinkles. To reduce or eliminate sagging eyelids, blepharoplasty can be done. Sedation and general anesthesia can be used for your comfort and relaxation.

The surgeries that Dr. Burger performs in the hospital are for major jaw reconstruction of orthognathic surgery, tumor reconstruction from cancer surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, medical compromised patients, most facial trauma injuries and fractures and cleft palate surgery.
