Dental implants are changing the way people live! They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth which look, feel, and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth and replaces them with implants regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved.
What are Dental Implants?
The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts that are inserted into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes. They are surgically placed into the jawbone. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Small posts are then attached to the implant that protrudes through the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.
Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.
Surgical Procedure for Implant Placement
The surgical procedure to place the implant has become a very easy procedure. Patients tell us that the implant procedure is easier then a routine tooth extraction. Most implant procedures are performed with local anesthesia (Novocaine).
The implant is placed within the jawbone to replace the root of a natural tooth. The healing time is only about 1 to 2 days. The bone will bond to the implant for 3 to 6 months. Most implant procedures are done in one stage (inserting the implant and the abutment at a later date as stage two). The healing abutment prepares the gingiva (gum tissue) for the future crown. During this time you will be able to wear a temporary denture to replace the missing teeth and would be able to eat a soft diet.
